Auditions: April 7 & 8 with callbacks April 9, beginning at 7pm


Casting: 4 men, 7 women, 2 boys, 5 girls, 10-20 ensemble members. Genders are as defined by the playwrights. Community Players takes an inclusive stance towards casting.


Production dates: June 5-8 & 12-15, 2025

 

What to do: Those auditioning will be asked to read a cutting from the script and prepare a 16- to 24-bar cut of a musical theatre selection of your choosing. Please bring sheet music as an accompanist will be provided.

About   the   show: One of the most beloved musicals of all time! In Austria, 1938, an exuberant young governess brings music and joy back to the family of the imperious Captain von Trapp, only to face danger as the Nazis gain power. This inspirational story includes the cherished songs “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi” and countless others.

Ages listed below are as defined by the playwrights and may not be entirely reflected in casting.


Maria Rainer (soprano, 20-35) A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey. She is young, free-spirited, warm, gentle, and full of determination.


Captain Georg von Trapp (baritone, 35-45) A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished and structured in the way he runs his life, but underneath he is warm and understanding.


Liesl von Trapp (mezzo, 16) The oldest child, blossoming into a young lady. She has a maternal edge to her and she cares deeply for her younger siblings.


Friedrich von Trapp (14) His tough exterior shows that is very much trying to be the “man” of the family.


Louisa von Trapp (13) Her rebellious attitude makes her slow to warm to their new nanny, Maria.


Kurt von Trapp (falsetto, 10) Gentle and mischievous.


Brigitta von Trapp (9) Smart, an avid reader.


Marta von Trapp (7) Sweet and gentle.


Gretl von Trapp (6) The adorable youngest child.


The Mother Abbess (soprano, 40+) Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative.


Max Detweiler (tenor/baritone, 30+) A charming man of sophistication who enjoys the good life; a true a loyal friend to the von Trapp family.


Elsa Schraeder (mezzo, 35-50) A baroness of taste and elegance, she is sophisticated and mature.


Rolf Gruber (low tenor, 17+) Suitor to Liesl, a telegram delivery boy who later becomes a Nazi soldier.


Sister Margaretta (mezzo) Mistress of Postulants, very kind and understanding.


Sister Berthe (alto) Mistress of Novices, prudish and strait-laced with a quick tongue; she is less tolerant than the other nuns.


Sister Sophia (soprano) Neither demanding nor critical, she is content to stick to the rules.


Frau Schmidt (non-singing, 30+) The stoic housekeeper, she does her job with efficiency but without affection.


Franz (non-singing, 30+) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit. He is loyal to the fascist cause.


Herr Zeller (non-singing, 40+) Stern and unsmiling, he is a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.


Ursula A von Trapp family maid.


Baron Elberfeld A neighbor of Captain von Trapp.


Admiral von Schreiber A member of the Nazi navy who attempts to bring Captain von Trapp to Berlin.


Ensemble Roles (singing and non-singing) Neighbors of the von Trapps, nuns, novices, postulants, soldiers, and festival concert contestants.
